Alabama Prisons

DSCN0412Many of you were praying for us at the end of January as we participated in a prison outreach in Alabama. Thank you so much! Last year was our first time going into prisons…and we couldn’t wait to go back. We Care prison ministry works with inmates year-round and in January they have the ReNew Hope crusade. It’s humbling to be able to be a part of it.

Sunday morning all the volunteers, musicians, and anyone else involved gathered for worship, teaching, and required training. A winter storm was working its way around the southeast and a number of volunteers were not able to be there this year, but it was still neat to see the number of people who came. (One of our answers to prayer was safety on the way down. Some of the roads were icy from the storm.)12604925_944712122289026_7436657371776391864_o

We were stationed for a few nights in Atmore where the We Care headquarters is, so meals were shared there by all the volunteers assigned to the area. It provided good fellowship and time to exchange reports of how the services went in different prisons.P1140778

We sang at three men’s prison and one women’s. The first night started off with rejoicing–the chaplain stood at the front and greeted the inmates with, “This is the day that the Lord has made!” They clapped and cheered. Yes, even in prison there is joy and hope when people have Jesus. Pray for those on the inside.

The first night Dad realized shortly before we were supposed to leave for the prison that we needed to get something at the store. On his way to the van he twisted his ankle quite badly, and there was no time to do anything about it…so he went to the store and when he got back we went to the prison. His ankle and foot proceeded to swell and turn purple. By God’s grace he was able to do the walking and standing he needed to do. To add to the story, the hotel we were in for a few nights had no elevator so he had to climb several flights of stairs multiple times each day. The bright side of the no-elevator situations was rest of us got a good, much-needed workout carrying all our instruments and equipment up and down the stairs (with, of course, the purpose of going to the prisons or settling in the hotel for the night).

When we got home a couple weeks later, Dad went in for an X-ray…and it turned out he broke his ankle. But, as we saw, God gives strength in time of need.

Each night we saw God moving in people’s hearts as they heard songs of hope, love and grace. The speakers gave powerful messages, two of them telling their personal testimonies…how they had been behind bars before and how receiving Jesus has changed their lives forever. Many of the inmates responded each night to the invitations that were given.

The last night was one of those testimony messages. Listening to this man’s story and seeing what he is like today is a powerful demonstration of the grace of God. But really, we all are in need of grace and forgiveness. There is nothing greater than grace… and who of us doesn’t need God’s grace?

At the end of sharing his story and explaining the gospel, he asked for a show of hands for those who wanted to receive Jesus. Understand, this was at a work release facility, minimum security, and these men were close to getting out of prison. It probably wasn’t rock bottom for them anymore. But in that small chapel, the hands went up. They wanted Jesus.

God was moving that week all over the state of Alabama. Many, many prisons were covered. We could see Him at work in different ways…the tears that flowed, the heads bowed and hands lifted in worship, the arms of a young inmate around the shoulders of two young volunteers as they prayed. People realizing their need for Jesus.

That makes everything worth it.

To Winnipeg and Pickle Lake

It has become an annual occurrence now for us to go north to Canada in just about the coldest time of the year. Yes, it happens to be our Pickle Lake trip. This year we went to Winnipeg first to visit with friends from when we lived up there “way back in the nineties.” We are so thankful for all the brothers and sisters there who pray for us and we enjoyed visiting with many of them.

We stayed with good friends of ours whom we lived down the street from when Canada was our home.

Sunday we went to the church we used to go to, and we were told, “Welcome home!” It was good to visit again after not being there in a few years. Everywhere we went we were blessed to catch up with friends and hear what God is doing in different lives. Thank you to everyone who showed us hospitality during that short weekend!

Then we were off to Pickle Lake. We stopped in Dryden to spend the night at Beaver Lake, where the NYP staff is so gracious to let us stay so we don’t have to drive remote roads in the dark. Tuesday found us pulling in to Pickle Lake and setting up for the Pickle Lake Winter Road Conference at Friendship Baptist Church. (See our previous Pickle Lake posts for more details.)

Over the weekend, after the Winter Road Conference, the Freedom in Christ Conference (outreach meetings) was held at the town hall. Each night God brought more people out, and we saw specific prayer answered; for example, a certain a young person who may have never been to church before came. We know the gospel went out to a number of people who don’t know Jesus.

Saturday morning we held a kids club (with some extra help) at the town hall for the community children. We had a lot of fun singing with them, playing games, and acting out the story of Jericho.

And, as also has become a tradition, we went Canadian bowling. For those of you who are not familiar with this, let me paint a picture. There are only five pins. The balls are quite small and all the same weight with no finger holes. You get three attempts each turn.

Needless to say, it is more challenging than “normal” bowling (or maybe “American” bowling?). I think that must be why they give you three tries instead of two.

It was so much fun to just bowl and laugh and with everyone. In a two-lane bowling alley a game takes a while and everyone is engaged in the whole thing.

But then when one lane breaks down and it turns into a one-lane bowling alley…well, then you have a bowling experience that is even more abnormal than Canadian bowling.

P.S. Gutter balls are very common (we shall blame this on the fact that there were no bumpers).20160115_134016(0)

Lake Traverse and Spirit Lake

Lest you think that travel is all we do…it’s not. It’s not even most of what we do.  But here again we bring you details of another trip because God brings us places and orchestrates stories that we could never write ourselves.

This trip was supposed to be a family trip, starting with a concert at a church on a South Dakota reservation (Lake Traverse) and then taking us to the Spirit Lake Nation in North Dakota for church and outreach meetings.  It started out as a family trip. Mom was not feeling well at all when it was time to head out…she had a terrible cough and some back pain. But she was a real trooper and made the trip to South Dakota with us and made it through the concert. It turned out to be a fun evening, seeing some people we had met at the Native family camp at Cooperstown Camp earlier this summer in North Dakota.

We drove back to Fargo to spend the night before heading to Spirit Lake. In the morning, Mom was doing worse and so we decided to head home and see how she was the next day. We dreaded the thought of having to make the rest of the trip with out her. But that is what we had to do. So the rest of us left very early Sunday to make the four hour drive to Spirit Lake where Dad was scheduled to preach that morning.  Our destination was Dakota Baptist church where the Young family is serving God.  The brothers and sisters there welcomed us warmly and treated us better than we deserve.  It was a real blessing to be part of their fellowship.  After the Sunday morning meeting, they served Buffalo roast.  It was amazing!  Did we mention that eating is an important (and enjoyable) part of the culture?IMG_0109

That evening we did our first concert, without Mom. It was a challenge, not just missing an instrument on some of the songs, but when a family member isn’t there it really leaves a hole. Hard as it was, God gave us grace. We had three (or so we thought) more times yet to sing.  Dad preached on John 3.  We were encouraged to hear from Paul that more people came out than he expected.

The gatherings on Monday and Tuesday evenings were held at the community college. We sang both nights, and the first night Dad preached a powerful gospel message, while the second night he addressed the church: are we living as evidence that God has saved us?

The turnout was not high in numbers but God knows His plan for each person who was there. We were blessed to see how God was working, including this amazing story: On Sunday afternoon Mr. Young took us driving around the area, and he and Dad started talking about what the best way would be to try to get The Storyteller on air at the local radio station, which Dad has wanted to do for several years. Monday evening after the meeting at the college a man came up to Dad and introduced himself, and asked if we had a CD to play our music on the radio. This was the “radio man”! He ended up inviting us to come the next day and sing on the radio and do an interview. So the next day we squeezed six extra people and five instruments into the tiny radio booth and sang about Jesus. Dad was able to introduce him to The Storyteller…and to the glory of God it is now airing in Spirit Lake and beyond!

Tuesday morning before lunch we were able to go to the elders’ care home and sing for the people there.  We were served menudo and hominy soup for lunch afterwards… with frybread.20151006_135407

And…one morning Mr. Jerry offered to take us duck hunting. Although we would have to get up super early, we all decided to go (the waking time made some people more reluctant). After all, we had done trap shooting before, so it shouldn’t be too hard, right?

We used Mr. Jerry’s outfit supply…all meant for people taller than us. The results were rather hilarious. We saw many ducks and geese. We took many shots. And it turns out that shooting a flying bird is harder than shooting a clay pigeon. We did not bring one bird home.

But it sure was a lot of fun. We talked and laughed, and laughed, and laughed. We were quiet when it was necessary.

Just when we were about as blessed as we could feel, our new friends Jerry and Nancy who fed us so well gave us ladies each a bouquet of beautiful flowers.

We were grateful for this whole trip, and being able to see God work. He opened up the door at the radio station, He allowed unsaved to hear the gospel, and He gave us lots of grace and strength to take this trip and sing without Mom. We were glad to see her when we got home!  And, she’s feeling better these days.

I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.  Psalm 89:1
