Family Fall Retreat

Towering pines…teaching and singing in the chapel…eight-thirty breakfast bell…it must be Storybook Lodge! We were not able to make it to family camp this summer, so we decided we had to go to the family fall retreat.

We had a good weekend, seeing friends, learning more from God’s Word, and all the “little” things that come along with camp…unfortunately, however, we did not take very many pictures. Enjoy the few here!

The speaker was Paul Bramsen, a missionary to west Africa. His main focus was based on the account of Jesus on the road to Emmaus, in Luke 24, and how we can use the model that Jesus did in sharing the gospel in this passage–start at the beginning of the Bible, show them God’s plan for a Redeemer and how that was fulfilled in Jesus Christ. It was also encouraging to hear about Muslims who are coming to know Jesus as their Savior as a result of the ministry of the Bramsens.

We always look forward to camp, and somehow we end up wanting it to last longer!

My sisters and I (Sara) had the privilege of going down to help with the Bright Lights conferences in St. Cloud, MN, October 8-12.  It was an amazing week of ministry and fellowship as we served as part of the staff for the conferences.

Bright Lights is a discipleship ministry for girls encouraging them to be strong for the Lord in their youth.  There are over 500 Bright Lights discipleship groups in the U.S. and internationally (visit our Bemidji group’s blog), and during the summer/fall the Sarah Mally (founder of Bright Lights ministry) and staff conduct conferences all over the place.

We were so blessed to be able to help with the Strong In the Lord conference and the Radiant Purity conference.  Both conferences include main sessions packed with teaching, stories, skits, testimonies, chalk drawings, and music.  There are also small groups for the girls attending to discuss what they are learning in the main sessions, as well as sessions for the parents.

We were glad to have the opportunity to serve as small group leaders (Sara) and small group assistants (Deborah and Abigail) for both conferences, as well as helping with many other aspects of the conferences, such as making snacks, greeting attendees, helping them to find their name tags, handing out notebooks, sharing a testimony, and Abby even got to help out with a skit! 🙂

We were so refreshed by the fellowship with the other young ladies on the team.  It was great to spend time sharing insights from the Word, praying together, sharing reports and responses from the girls in our small groups, and simply talking and laughing together.  On Thursday (our “off-day), we also had the opportunity to go witnessing at a nearby mall and then spend time outdoors at a nature park.

We are continually blessed and encouraged by the Bright Lights ministry and the role that it has played in our lives.  It was so nice to get to know Sarah and Grace better over the week… they are such sweet, godly young ladies with a passion for serving the Lord.

Garden Hill, continued

posterIsn’t that precious? It was written on a Sunday School poster at a church in Garden Hill, Manitoba.

The tent meetings that we were singing at started Friday night (see previous blog post). Saturday afternoon, Trevor, our “chauffer,” and his family came to pick us up and take a tour of the community and go blueberry picking. We piled all our instruments into the pickup bed so we could go straight to the tent afterward, and all us kids climbed in the back too.  We headed out to a rather remote part of the reserve.  After a little bit it started pouring rain–pouring–so he stopped the truck so we could all get in the cab. There were four of them and seven of us. You do the imagining. It was very crowded–no, it was beyond crowded. It was squished. Sardine-level.

It made for a lot of laughter and some good memories! We were driving very slowly along, when suddenly we heard an awful scraping noise and the truck came to an abrupt stop. We had hit a rock. So we all got out and picked blueberries. Trevor was able to back the truck off the rock without any problem, I think.

We had the privilege of teaching Sunday School the next day. A fairly large group of children came out, and we had a good time singing, learning about Joshua, memorizing a Bible verse, and singing some more!

Sunday afternoon there was a church meeting and a baptism. It was thrilling to see two people publicly declare their faith in Jesus Christ!

Originally there was only one person getting baptized, but someone else came forward. Praise the Lord! It was really a joy to watch.

God really moved in an amazing way. When the invitation was given, people came… some to bring their cares to the Lord, some to salvation.  At least ten people were saved that night! And most of them were kids!  One thing we will not forget was seeing an elderly woman put her trust in Jesus.  There was a long line of women waiting to hug her and welcome her into the family. It was very moving. Seeing all these people come to Jesus was definitely one of the greatest highlights of the whole trip!

One of the leaders asked everyone who had gotten saved that night to come to the front so the rest of us could shake their hands. Not quite all of them were there, but it was such a joy to see the line of them and to welcome them! We have never gotten to experience such celebration before.

It was such a special time. We are grateful that God allowed us to be a part of it.

The next day was our departure. We were flying out in a smaller plane than we came in on, so we had to fly in two trips. Dad, Sara, and the majority of our luggage went out on the first flight earlier in the morning. They flew to Red Lake, ON, where one of our friends from NYP had driven our van to make the flight shorter, and then they drove back to Dryden.

Our flight back to Dryden was uneventful (which means good). It was fun to see Dad and Sara waiting for us at the airport when we landed.adjustThis trip was so rich and full of God’s blessings.
